3 reasons to avoid short term diets

Monday, June 29th, 2009

Have you ever asked yourself: “Why not do a short term diet and get some quick results?”
Well, read on and I’ll tell you exactly why not.
There are a lot of short term diets out there.
Most of them are very radical and sometimes even painful.
There are a few “sane” short term diets for you to try but I would vote against those diets as well.
There are of course benefits to earn from such diets,
In fact, I have seen results from such diets on myself and others.
After all, many of us will accept two weeks of suffering in exchange for some quick weight loss, right?
But is it worth it?
Before you say “sure, it’s only for two weeks” please read these 3 reasons:
Reason no. 1 – most of the short term diets are harmful.
Not just harmful for two weeks but actually traumatizing for the body.
I have heard of some diets that require you to fast from 17:00 till morning.
It’s almost half a day without food!
Our body is not programmed to deal with such harsh conditions.
Besides – starving yourself will only slow down your metabolism.
Reason no. 2 – This is mentally wrong.
These sorts of diets are not only unhealthy but they are actually teaching you to how to keep making mistakes.
Let me explain,
You do this diet, you suffer, you lose weight.
That’s the equation, right?
What does that teach you?
Two things: that suffering is an integral part of any diet and that it’s suffering is an acceptable and even welcomed part of life.
Both are totally wrong and both are embedded into your brain when such a diet works for you.
This is not a matter of decision!
Look at your body as a machine, your brain is the controls.
When you go through a physically exhausting process your mind is making a note of it.
But when you feel the success of weight loss afterwards, your mind connects the two.
The bottom line is, it becomes much harder for you to go on a diet which doesn’t involve suffering.
Reason no. 3 – It won’t last.
This is the main reason to avoid short term diets, they just don’t last.
You will regain the weight, maybe not all of it, but most of it for sure.
There is no way around it, your body will get back to what it is used to.
So if you are overweight due to what you eat (like most overweight people),
You will just gain this weight back in a few weeks.
To sum up, a real diet is a diet you can live with,
A diet that fits you and that you can go on and do for years.
Most effective diets are about changing habits, short term diets will only harm your efforts of doing that in the future.
Please, do not make this connection between weight loss and suffering,
It shouldn’t be that way.
Good Luck,
David.

Another quick diet failure story

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Hi everybody,
Earlier today I met a female friend of mine who is a big fan of short crazy diets.
her latest diet was about eating lots of fruits and not eating after 5 pm.
I of course am a big fan of “real” diets that you can actually apply to your life and not some crazy thing that you have to be a bit crazy yourself to actually succeed in.
so a month ago when she started this diet, I told her that this is not a good idea.
well, today she told me that she finally cracked, she ate non stop for two days and after a week, she regained almost half of the 23 pounds she lost.
I hear tens of these stories every week, and I just wanted to share this one with you so you can see how frustrating it is.
this woman is not too overweight (she is definitely below 200lbs) and she looks fine, but the fact that she keeps failing this type of diets over and over again is very frustrating to her.

please take a note of this story and keep in mind that weather it takes a month or 3 months these diets NEVER last.

have a great day,
David

Why Are We Failing Our Diets? 5 Mistakes we all make

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

There are so many reasons people fail their weight loss diets,
But it is not as mysterious as you may think.
People often think of a diet as a short list of simple do’s and don’ts
That is, of course, over simplifying the concept of diet.
You should look at a diet as a living thing that you should adapt to.
And there are some more complex things you should definitely avoid.
1. Life Style Mistakes
As I mentioned before, you have to think of a diet as a change in lifestyle.
If you just list some things you should not eat,
It won’t change your habits.
If you have no time, you don’t work out.
If you love going out a lot, you probably drink and eat unhealthy foods.
The point is, you need to be attentive to your diet.
You have to adapt your lifestyle or select a more fitting diet.
2. Over Eating
While over eating is a complicated subject,
I can sum it up to: Addictions, Habits, Stress and eating when you’re not hungry.
The most important thing is to watch what you eat when you are not hungry,
When you are not hungry everything you eat becomes fat,
But don’t mistake hunger for famine – we’ll get to that later.
Aside of that, you should work on your habits and
The place that food takes up in your life.
3. Wrong Food
Not all people have sufficient knowledge about food.
That’s a fact you have to take into account.
Eating small amounts of the wrong food will never make you thinner.
There are, as you must know, foods you should avoid at all costs,
Like fast food, sweets, fat cheeses, etc.
But you should acquire some basic knowledge about what the body needs and what destroys your diet.
4. Fast Diets
Fast diets are our most fearsome enemy.
We can’t look it in the eye without having to try it.
And the worst thing of all is:
It works!
It will help you lose weight, but it is not worth it.
Doing short term diets will only teach your body the wrong ideas,
Your brain will connect dieting to suffering and believe me, you don’t want that.
In order to lose weight for real,
You need to get to know your body and its needs.
You need to get accustomed to living right.
5. Suffering
You have to understand one simple thing,
Dieting has nothing to do with suffering.
If you are suffering while dieting you are obviously doing the wrong diet.
When you’ll learn to eat the right food and do the right exercise,
You’ll see that suffering is just not a part of the equation.
And besides, what chances do you have if you need to suffer so much for every few pounds you lose.
Please make sure you avoid these mistakes in your diet,
I can assure you it will be very useful.

Good Luck,
David.

Why do we need to exercise to lose weight? - 3 reasons to get yourself moving

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

Can it be more obvious? When you are on a diet you work out! It doesn’t get much simpler than that, right?
But why should you work out? Do you know?
The answer is not “because your dietician told you”
I’ll give you 3 reasons why, here we go…
1. Burn Calories
You want to lose fat don’t you?
Of course you do.
Most people are not nearly active enough to burn calories without working out.
That’s a fact!
Now you tell me you have a great diet and you will lose your weight based on metabolism alone.
While this can be achieved, it’s highly unlikely to happen.
Statistically, most overweight people will never reach this metabolic state.
This is a privilege only a small amount of people have.
Your body needs to work hard and persistently to really lose weight.
So not only do you need to exercise, you need long aerobic sessions.
Those will force your body to use fat cells for energy.
2. Muscle
I want to make this point clear,
Muscle is not only for body builders!
I know not all of us want to have a lean muscular body, and it’s really ok.
But you must understand the importance of muscle to your diet.
When the body receives calories it sorts them for one of two processes:
Catabolism - the process of breaking down molecules and produce energy.
Anabolism - the opposite of catabolism, the process of storing unused energy in the body.
Now, if you have more muscle, your body needs more energy to maintain it.
Yes, that’s right, if you have more muscle you burn more calories just by being alive!
3. Mind
Don’t neglect the mind!
Exercising regularly increases your sense self control, your self esteem and your confidence.
I’ll say it again:
Self control,
Self esteem,
Confidence.
Sound familiar?
Yes, these are the same reasons I wanted to lose weight for!
Do your workouts, It will make you feel good!
And when you feel good you are more competent and your weight loss efforts are more fruitful.
Then you’re getting yourself out of that vicious cicle of eating too much and feeling bad about it and into this circle:
You work out regularly then you feel good,
You feel good then you have more motivation to keep at it.
Well, I think I made it a bit clearer.
I hope you will get a fitness program and make exercising a part of your everyday life.

Good Luck,
David H. Mason

What is a diet anyway?

Monday, June 15th, 2009

The word diet is very meaningful to a lot of people,
But do you know what is it exactly?
By definition being on a diet means knowing and planning what you eat.
One common misconception is that diet means starving, fasting, or enduring suffering of different sorts. It does not mean that. These bad connotations are merely deformed ways of dieting.
It may include the withholding of certain foods but that depends on your diet, and it most often will include adding certain foods to your daily menu.
A second misconception revolves around the planning of a diet. Put simple - planning a diet is no simple task,
To plan a diet one needs to have a lot of knowledge in his/her possession.
It’s not enough to knowing what foods are fatty and which are not,
You also have to know the structure of different foods,
And the effect of every type of food on our metabolism.
This is why you need to gather a lot of knowledge in order to plan your own diet.
Of course you always have the option of using a professional to plan your diet for you.
A third misconception: Diet is not a synonym to weight loss,
There are different kinds of diets and weight loss diet is only one of them.
Weight gain diet:
Weight gain diet is mostly used by athletes and body builders.
It is used to gain weight for muscle building and bulking up for all kind of reasons.
The point is not only eating whatever you want and get fat.
It’s planning a menu to help the body gain the weight correctly & healthily.
Weight control diet:
For some people keeping their weight is a big issue.
This kind of diet is designed to help people not gain and not lose weight.
It is often used by people who lost weight successfully but are afraid to gain the weight back.
It is also used by people who do aerobic activities regularly and do not want to lose weight & muscle.
Weight loss diet:
The most common of all diets,
Used by overweight people all around the world with the sole purpose of losing fat.
Weight loss diets can be very different.
There are many approaches regarding what is the best/fastest/healthiest way to lose fat.
There are some very radical diets that require serious discipline and devotion.
For example there is the “no-carb” diet,
This diet is currently debated all over the world because of the importance of carbohydrates to all the body’s functions.
There are weight loss diets that revolve around eating a lot of a specific food like lettuce, other vegetables or even ice cream.
Alongside with the “normal” diets we can see the pills, powders, oils and all kinds of food additives.
These are diets that you should be very careful with,
Some of them are totally unhealthy and mostly there results can be reproduced with a natural and healthy diet.
In short, changing your diet is not something to be taken lightly. A wrong kind of diet might actually be harmful.
I hope I helped you get a better understanding on what is a diet,

Good Luck,
David.
